Local leg spinner wins prestigious Sir Jack Hobbs Award for 2025
Wallasey Cricket Club is delighted to celebrate one of our own after Oliver Sutton was named the most outstanding Under-16 schoolboy cricketer in England, winning the Sir Jack Hobbs Silver Jubilee Memorial Prize, one of the most prestigious individual awards in the game.
Oliver, a talented leg spinner who has come through the ranks at Wallasey CC, collected his trophy from former England and Surrey captain Alec Stewart at a ceremony in London in November 2025.
A Season to Remember
The award follows a remarkable 2025 season in which Oliver took 82 wickets across club and county. He was the leading wicket taker in the ECB Under-16 competition, claiming 32 wickets for Cheshire Cricket Board U16s, including a stunning 7 for 29 against Northumberland, as the county side reached the national semi-finals.
He also took 44 wickets across Wallasey’s 1st and 2nd XI sides throughout the season.
In Illustrious Company
The Sir Jack Hobbs Prize has been awarded since 1970. Previous winners include England legends Mike Gatting, Michael Atherton, Mark Ramprakash and, most recently, Jacob Bethell.
Oliver is the first winner from a Wirral club in the award’s history.
Oliver’s Reaction
Speaking after the ceremony, Oliver said: “I am very proud to have won this prestigious award, but I am not looking too far ahead and plan on working really hard over the winter and next season for both my club and county and doing the best I can.”
A Wallasey CC Story
Oliver’s cricket story is rooted here at KJM Oval. Living next to the ground, we have all seen the countless hours he has spent in the nets over the last ten years.
Of course his dad, Toffo, is also a Wallasey club legend. The pair famously shared all ten wickets together in a 2nd XI match against Birkenhead Park CC back in 2023.
We are enormously proud of Oliver’s achievement and can’t wait to see what the 2026 season brings.
